In bowling, the stance is when you have the ball and are getting ready to play. You must be behind the foul line, but where? It is legal to start from any position, however, there are usually arrows or spots on the floor to guide you. The smaller your build, the closer you should be to the foul line. If you have a big build or long legs, use the spots that are furthest back.

Once you get used to your approach, you may want to choose a different position, but beginners will find that these spots are helpful at least at first. Stance also refers to how you hold the ball just prior to beginning play. Those with light balls may prefer what is called the upright stance. The body is kept upright and the ball held level with the chin. This creates a more powerful down and back swing. But if the ball is heavy, you may have trouble keeping your grip on it at the bottom of the swing.

The next position is to hold the ball at about waist level and bend slightly forward from the waist. This is called the half - crouch position. This is an excellent position for tall people, or those who find it too hard to swing that ball from the chin down.

The body being in a slightly more upright position gives a little more momentum on the downswing, but not so much that it loosens the grip. There is more control over both the ball and the release. The third stance is the one that experts recommend new players begin with and stick to.

Whatever stance you use, make sure you keep your shoulders square to the target - that’s the space between the first and second arrows. Eyes should be kept on the target rather than on the ball, the feet or the laneway.
